Food for Life Program

On November 18, 2013, Mount Sinai’s Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences celebrated the launch of the “Food for Life” Program at the Clinic for Inherited Metabolic Diseases. Many of the 500+ patients who are treated at the Clinic must adhere to very restrictive diets in order to avoid serious health complications; however, the specialized foods they require can be prohibitively expensive and are usually not covered by insurance. The “Food for Life” Program features a newly installed onsite pantry stocked with a variety of these specialized foods, making them available free of charge to qualifying patients. The Food for Life Program was established with a generous donation from the Genetic Disease Foundation and relies solely on philanthropic support to sustain its daily operations.
